Il annonçait par la même l’arrêt de sa carrière en tant que joueur NBA lors d’une conférence de presse. Un très grand moment d’émotion mais également un aveu qui a eu un impact énorme aux Etats-Unis à une époque où le SIDA était encore synonyme de mort proche. 22 ans plus tard, Magic Johnson, légende du basket mondial, a combattu la maladie.
